Bring Your Companys Brand To Life With Events bit.ly/2C9Pxya We need gender neutral dress codes in the workplace. If you dont yet agree with that statement, look no farther than a 55-page presentation given to women executives at Ernst Young in a June 2018 training. pThe presentation, which made headlines last month when an offended participant a href=https//www.huffpost.com/entry/women-ernst-young-how-to-dress-act-around-men_n_5da721eee4b002e33e78606a target=_blankleaked it to the Huffington Post/a, reinforced gendered stereotypes of how women should dress and present themselves at work. Some highlights, which are actually lowlights in terms of equality in the workforce/pul class=ee-ul ee-ulliA list of appearance blunders for women to avoid, including no-nos like too-short skirts, plunging necklines, bottle blonde, flashy jewelry/liliOutfit and grooming suggestions to minimize distractions from your skills sic set like good haircut, manicured nails, and w ell-cut attire/liliAdvice on how to dress dont flaunt your body sexuality scrambles the mind/li/ulpThe women, there to invest in their professional development, were not learning how to be better leaders or combat sexist stereotypes at work, but instead were being lectured to about what to wear and how to groom themselves./ppWhile the presentation wasnt the official EampY dress code, it does highlight bias and assumptions made around gender that women have to manage. And this particular training focused only on the male-female binary. Employees who identify as transgender or nonbinary might feel even more burdened by dress code policies based on gender. /ppImagine how much more productive all employees, regardless of gender, could be, if they werent focused on avoiding dress code policing./ppTraditional gender-based dress codes can also discriminate on the basis of race. Many grooming guidelines for women, including rules on acceptable haircuts, are extra burdens for black employee s, particularly those who want to wear their hair in natural styles. a href=https//daily.jstor.org/how-natural-black-hair-at-work-became-a-civil-rights-issue/ target=_blankIn 2010, Chastity Jones got a job offer/a to be a customer service representative from Catastrophe Management Solutionsbut the offer was contingent on her cutting off her locs. When she refused, the company took back the job offer, and when she sued, with the help of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, she lost her case in 2013 and again in 2016, when her appeal was dismissed. /ppAnd beyond forcing women of color to maintain their hair in a way thats deemed acceptable, gender-based dress codes can also discriminate against people of certain religions. Employees whose faiths keep them from cutting their hair or necessitate that they wear certain clothing (including head coverings) shouldnt be forced to adapt their beliefs to what their employer deems professionally appropriate for a woman at work./ppThe po ssibility for gender-, race-, and faith-based discrimination posed by prescriptive employee dress codes has a href=https//www.hrc.org/resources/workplace-dress-codes-and-transgender-employees target=_blankled the Human Rights Campaign to recommend/a that if an employer has a dress code, it should modify it to avoid gender stereotypes and enforce it consistently. Requiring men to wear suits and women to wear skirts or dresses, while legal, is based on gender stereotypes. Alternatively, codes that require attire professionally appropriate to the office or unit in which an employee works are gender-neutral./ph3Okay, So Gender Neutral Dress Codes Sound Good. What Do They Look Like?/h3pIn their simplest (which, in my opinion, also means best) form, gender neutral dress codes at the workplace can take the form of General Motors dress policy. When now-CEO Mary Barra was VP of global human resources for the automotive giant, a href=https//qz.com/work/1242801/gms-dress-code-is-only-two-words / target=_blankshe replaced their 10-page dress code with two words/a Dress appropriately. /ppIn the article linked above, the author explains why Barras dress code works so well She avoided assumptions, instead choosing to trust her employees judgment, which in turn empowered all employees and was particularly impactful for women. /ppFor workplaces that need more specificity about what employees can wear, HR should follow in the footsteps of other institutions that have successfully adopted gender-neutral dress codes. Namely, high schools./ppAfter a wave of protests, social media outrage, and thoughtful advocating, a href=https//www.dispatch.com/news/20180919/more-schools-revamping-sexist-dress-codes target=_blankseveral schools have revamped their dress codes/a, which tended to put undue burden on female students. Dont place burdens on anyone based on their gender, and try to empower employees to manage their own appearance in accordance with professional expectations./ppFor business casual workplaces, try this, a href=https//www.forbes.com/sites/forbeshumanresourcescouncil/2018/09/28/gender-based-dress-codes-human-resources-diversity-and-legal-impact/355d9f064f53 target=_blankadapted from Forbes/a Employees should dress in business casual attire, which could include casual slacks and skirts, collared shirts, blouses, or sweaters. First Duty and Future Assignments in the Military

First Duty and Future Assignments in the MilitaryFirst Duty and Future Assignments in the MilitaryFirst duty station selection is made (in either basic training or technical school/AIT/A-School), based ?upon your preferences, and the needs of the service. While the services will consider your preferences, the overriding deciding factor is where the military needs you the most. Some Navy jobsallow your assignment to be based on your class-standing in A-School. And ofcourse, it goes without saying that assignments are based on valid vacancies. If you have the job of tank-fixer, youre only going to be assigned to bases that have tanks to fix. Future Assignments After the first duty assignment, subsequentassignments are done a little differently. In most cases, youll have a little more say in future assignments, than you have for the first duty assignment. There are a few restrictions, however. First-term (those in their first enlistment) enlisted members assigned to a continental (C ONUS) U.S.location must have 12 months time-on-station before being eligible to move to an overseas location and must have 24 months time-on-station before being allowed to move to anotlageher continental U.S. location. Career (those who have re-enlisted at least once) enlisted members assigned to the continental U.S. must have 24 months time-on-station to move to an overseas location and must have 36 months time-on-station in reservierung to move to another continental U.S. location. The length of time one spends on an overseas tour depends on the location. For example, most of Europe and Japan are considered standardoverseas tours. The length of the assignment is 24 months for single people, or those with dependents who elect not to bring their dependents, and 36 months for those who bring their dependents. Another type of overseas assignment, like most assignments to Korea, is considered remote. On a remote tour one cannot bring their family at government expense, and the tour-le ngth is 12 months. On the other hand, those returning from a remote tour usually get assignment preference over those returning from a standard tour. For standard overseas tours, one can generally increase his or her chances of being selected by volunteering for the extended tour length. This is the standard tour, plus 12 months. Of course, one can be involuntarily assigned overseasas well. In general, this is done based on the military members last overseas return date. Follow-on Assignment A follow-on assignment is an assignment after a remote tour. Those with orders for a remote tour can apply for their next assignment before they even depart to the remote tour. When is assigned to a 12-month remote tour, military members can move their dependents anywhere they want to live in theUnited States, at government expense, while the member is away. The government must then pay again to relocate the dependents from where they are living to the newassignment when the member returns f rom the remote tour. Single people, even though they dont have dependents can use the follow-on program, as well. Its important not to confuse assignments with deployments, which are of course based on many factors such as geopolitical situations and the need for U.S. military troops around the world. Hardship Assignments Each of the services also hasprocedures for hardship assignments. This allows a military member to apply for reassignment to a specific area/base, due to a valid family hardship. The militarys definition of hardship is when there are extreme family problems such as illness, death, or extremely unusual circumstances that are temporary in nature and the specific circumstances necessitate the military members presence. If the problem is not one that can be resolved within one year, ahardship dischargewill be considered, rather than a hardship assignment. Joint Spouse Assignments When one military member is married to another military member, both must apply to be assigned together. This is called a joint spouse assignment. The military will try to assign spouses together, but there are no guarantees. The success rate for joint spouse assignments is about 85 percent. Joint spouse assignments are obviously much easier to accommodate if both spouses are in the same branch of the military. Permissive Reassignments A permissive reassignmentis one that doesnt cost the government any money. Most permissive reassignments are in the form ofswaps, which is when one military member finds anotherwith the same rank and job, currently assigned (or with orders) to a base they want to go to. Both members who agree to swap must pay for their own move. This includes shipment of personal property. Usually, military personnel offices maintain lists of military people worldwide who are looking to swap. In order to be eligible for a swap, one must have the required time-on-station mentioned above. In other words, a first-termer must have 24 months time-on -station to swap with someone at another continental U.S. location. Base of Preference Before a military member re-enlists, he can apply to move to a base of his choice. The military, of course, wants this person to re-enlist, so they try to accommodate such base of preference requests. If approved, the member must then re-enlist to accept the assignment. Travel Entitlements When you graduate technical school, the military will pay the authorized costs for you to go to your next duty assignment or, to the port of your military flight for overseas assignments. The military does not pay you for travel on leave. They pay you for direct travel from your old duty assignment to your next duty assignment. If you travel home on leave, any additional cost is out of your pocket. Privately Owned Vehicle Shipment If you own a vehicle and get an overseas assignment, the military will either ship the vehicle for you or store it while you are away. Some locations dont allow the shippin g of a personal vehicle and others restrict this privilege to certain ranks. In these cases, the military will store the vehicle for you for free while you are assigned overseas. The military will pay to move your personal property from your home location to your first permanent duty station, or, you can rent a truck, move it yourself. In such cases, the military will reimburse you a portion of what it would have paid a contractor to move the vehicle.

How to Make Yourself an Undesirable Job Candidate

How to Make Yourself an Undesirable Job CandidateHow to Make Yourself an Undesirable Job CandidateJob interviews are a challenge, not only for the job seeker but also the hiring manager. As the hiring manager, my goal is to identify and hire a partie who is talented, trainable, and deeply committed to the work that I was leading. If you are a leader, you know that the right person, and the wrong person for that matter, would make a day and night difference.Because of this, I look at recruiting and interviewing to be critically important. Fundamentally, I am looking for a fit. This fit is not just a talent fit, but also a relationship fit. After all, statistics show that we spend 8 hours and 52 minutes at work each day in contrast to 25 minutes to care for the family. Here are ways to make yourself look like an undesirable job candidate by making a hiring manager seriously question if he/she should further progredienz your job candidacy.1. No questionsWhen I am interviewed, I love the part when I am asked, Do you have any questions for us? Why? Because I always have a list of questions, whether the person interviewing me is the CEO or the HR generalist. This is one chance for me to find out what the company is really about. What is the culture really like? What are the business challenges? And I get to find out straight from the horses mouth. So, when my interviewer does not ask any questions, a lot of thoughts go through my mind. Does this interviewer think they know the company already? Arent they at least somewhat curious? Furthermore, if they really have no questions, why cant they find some other way to engage me? It also gives the impression that they are a bit cold, unable to have a conversation, engage, and lead people somewhere.2. Bad questionsQuestions from the candidate reveal their interests and priorities. A bad question is a prelude to a candidate who is more than likely not a fit. Some bad questions that come to mindIf Im hired, when can I abflug app lying for other positions in the company? To me, this is a sign of a job hopper. I am not interested in hiring a job-hopper. I am not going to invest the time to train and equip this new employee if he is already planning an exit strategy. How quickly can I be promoted? When I hear this, I hear an opportunist rather than a team player. An opportunist is a poison to a team culture.Do you do background checks?I wonder what this person must be hiding.3. ExcusesTell me about a time where you failed. I love to ask this question. I want an employee who learns from past failures and challenges. I value a person who has scar tissue from the real world. However, some would focus on excuses and cast blame on the situation and environment that created the failure. These candidates will not make an ideal employee. They are unteachable. They are toxic to a collaborative work culture. No thank you.4. Overly aggressive negotiationWhen someone negotiates salary, benefits, or some other aspect of the r ole with over the top assertiveness, I quickly pull back. I think eitherThe person is not overly excited about the job as described. The person has an overly inflated ego and this will never end. These are all signs indicative of a prima donna. No thank you. If you raise red flags in the ways mentioned above, you will become the undesirable job candidate. The company will assume you will prevent the organization from continuing down a path of success, and eventually deteriorate the team.If you are interviewing for a job this week, and you want the job, do not make yourself undesirable by committing the mistakes mentioned above.

Employment Contract FAQ - Ireland

Employment Contract FAQ - Ireland Employment Contract FAQ - Ireland Why won't an oral Employment Contract be sufficient for me?The problem with oral agreements is that they are difficult to prove. If a dispute arose, a court would have to hear evidence and decide whose version of the truth to accept. If there is a written agreement, courts will generally be obligated to uphold its terms even if they don't agree with them. The employee may also be entitled to written terms of employment under the Terms of Employment (Information) Act, 1994. What is addressed in an Employment Contract?Employment Contracts typically address the following: the job position being offered and accepted; the term of employment; details of annual leave, sickness, and grievance policies; the remuneration that will be provided to the employee; and the responsibilities of the employee and employer. In addition, Employment Contracts may also provide specifics on: whether the employee will have a probation period; how confidential information is to be treated upon the employee's termination; and whether there are limitations on the employee's ability to compete with the employer's business upon the employee's termination. What are the duties of the employee? The duties of the employee refer to the tasks that will be performed or the functions and responsibilities of the job position. Ensure that your description of the employee's duties is clear. You should review your description and make sure that it is grammatically correct within the context of the document. What is the difference between an Employment Contract and a Service Agreement?Service Agreements are used to hire service providers or independent contractors, not employees. A Service Agreement is limited to a specific project or time period. Employment Contracts are used to hire employees. What is the difference between an employee and independent contractor?Generally, employees are viewed as workers who are employed whereas independent contractors are viewed as workers who are selfs of relevant factors are: who is providing the tools for the job; the level of skill required for the job; who controls the work and the work product; whether the hired party must provide oral/written progress reports; whether the job is performed on the business premises; the duration of the relationship between the parties; the ability to delegate or sub-contract the job of the hired party; whether the hired party has discretion over how long and when they work; whether any insurance or benefits are provided to the hired party; whether the hired party's expenses are reimbursed; whether the hired party can realise a profit or loss; whether the work is part of the regular business of the hiring party; whether the parties have a written agreement defining the status of the hired party; the method of payment; and the way the hired party is treated by taxing authorities. What is a probationary period?A probationary period is a limited period of time after the employee commences work during which the employer has the right to terminate the agreement. In some jurisdictions, termination can occur without notice or compensation (other than wages owed for hours of work already completed). Many employers require their employees to successfully complete a probationary period before offering them a longer term position. How much annual leave are employees entitled to take? The Organization of Working Time Act, 1997 provides that employees are entitled to annual leave equal to the greater of: (a) four weeks of leave if the employee works more than 1,365 hours in the year, (b) one third of a work-week of leave for each month where they work more than 117 hours, and (c) 8% of the hours worked in a year. For a full-time employee, the annual leave calculation will not exceed four weeks. For a part-time employee, calculations (b) and (c) will likely result in less than four weeks of leave per year. What does notice mean?Notice refers to a period of time prior to termination of the employment contract. The purpose of notice is to allow the employee to find other employment or the employer to find a replacement employee. In most jurisdictions, the law requires employers to give employees a notice period (or pay in lieu of notice) before termination. Typically, the length of the minimum notice period required by law depends on the length of the employment relationship. In some circumstances the employer may terminate the employee without notice if there is sufficient cause. In most jurisdictions if one's employment is terminated with cause, there is no requirement on the part of the employer to provide notice or pay in lieu of notice. However, the employer must ensure that the reason for termination is properly communicated at the time of termination. Some examples of cause are dishonesty, disloyalty, insubordination, lateness/absenteeism, disruption of business of affairs, alcoho l or drug use, incompetence, neglect of duty, criminal or immoral conduct and sexual harassment. Note that the employer may have to prove to a court (or other tribunal) that there was sufficient cause for termination. How can an employer protect work product and other confidential information? An employer can protect his/her confidential information by inserting a clause that says all confidential information, including work product, belongs to the employer. LawDepot's Employment Contract broadly defines confidential information to protect everything from trade secrets to customer lists. When should I specify a date of continuous employment? You should specify a date if the employee has commenced working for the employer prior to the start date of this employment contract (e.g. the employee has continuously worked for the same employer or another employer where such employment counts towards continuous employment). What is the difference between a non-competition clause and a non-solicitation clause?A non-competition clause prevents the employee from unfairly competing with the employer after the employment is terminated. This means that when the employee's employment comes to an end, he or she cannot take a job at a business which is in direct competition with the employer. A non-solicitation clause prevents the employee from inducing other employees or contractors from leaving the employer or from interfering with the employer's relationship with other employees in general. This means that the employee cannot invite the employer's other employees to move with him or her to another workplace. Courts MAY NOT enforce a non-competition or non-solicitation clause if: the clause could be injurious to the public (e.g. it could depress the local economy); the clause is broader than necessary to protect the employer; the clause would cause undue hardship on the employee (e.g. it would make it difficult for the employee to find new employment); or the clause has unreasonable time and geographic restrictions. What geographic restrictions can the employer make in the non-competition clause? You can only prevent an employee from engaging in a business that competes with your business within a geographic area large enough to protect your business. The restriction must be reasonable so that the employee is not restricted from engaging in his or her usual trade in an area that could not affect your business (e.g. 25 km from the employer's place of business). What are the employee's normal hours of work? The Organization of Working Time Act, 1997 imposes an obligation on employers to ensure that employees do not work more than an average of 48 hours per week.

How to Include a Photo on Your Resume

How to Include a Photo on Your Resume How to Include a Photo on Your Resume Including a photo on a resume is an important consideration. First of all, should you include a photo on your resume? In some countries (including the US, Canada, and the UK), you shouldnt include a photo because of anti-discrimination and labor laws. However, in some countries a photo is optional, and in others its expected. If putting a photo on a resume is optional in the country where youre applying for jobs you need to weigh up the pros and cons. Images can make a resume look more attractive and it can help to market yourself. There are also certain professions for which image is important, such as salespeople, bartenders, shop assistants, and recruiters. However, by having a photo on your resume you may put yourself at risk of discrimination. A photo can reveal a lot of personal information about you which has no relation to your ability to do the job. Your gender, age, ethnicity, religion, and physical characteristics should be irrelevant. Photos can also take up valuable space which could be used to showcase your actual abilities.Whether you decide to include a photo or not, using a resume builder is a time-effective way of producing a professional-looking resume. How to put a photo on a resumeIf youve decided to create a resume with a photo  you have three main considerations: the choice of photo,  its size, and its position on your resume. What picture to put on your resume? The type of resume photo you choose largely depends on the position youre applying for. In general, the aim is to appear professional. Wearing formal clothes and taking a headshot with a serious face or a soft smile is normally effective. However, try to mirror the company. Do some research and if youre applying for a job at a more relaxed company, your photo should reflect this. You should wear more casual clothes and smile. Whichever style of photo you choose you should make sure its high-resolution and high-quality.What size should your resume photo be?Space is precious on a resume a nd the focus should be on the content. Your skills, work experience, and qualifications are the most important parts and attaching a large photo is a waste of space. There is a balance to be struck. The size of your resume photo should not be so small that its difficult to see your face. A passport-size photo is generally large enough without taking up too much space.Where to put the resume photo? If you decide to include a resume photo you should place it at the top or near the top of the page. The top-right corner is a popular choice and a good one. It leaves plenty of room on the left for your contact details and your resume objective or personal statement. There are numerous resume templates with photos which you can use. They have been professionally designed and allow you to quickly produce attractive resumes with photos.Alternatives to including a photo on a resumeIf you think that a photo will help your chance of getting a job but, for whatever reason, you dont want to include it on your resume, there are alternatives. Many candidates include a link to their LinkedIn profile which normally has a photo which employers can see.Similarly, if you have a personal website which includes your picture, you can include a link. Other candidates choose to send a photo attached as a separate file rather than putting it on their resume.

Casting a Wide Net

Casting a Wide Net Casting a Wide Net Casting a Wide Net We have heard our share of buzz words in the last few years. But drone is near the top. And to be honest, they can be a great deal of fun. Taking wondrous picturesque nature shots that might require being an expert mountain climber otherwise. Or just cutting through the air as one more toy for aeronautic appreciation. But while it may be a hobby for some, in the wrong hands, a drone has the potential to do harm, says Mo Rastgaar, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University. I was watching the World Cup and there was mention of snipers, he says. I thought, What if someone meaning harm has a drone come into a stadium to hurt people and bullets wouldnt help? Through brainstorming, the thought of shooting nets from other drones to catch potential rogue drones seemed like a good way to go. A purchase was made of an off-the-shelf helicopter (a drone), and it was modified with a net gun. The guns are used for catching birds and my team geared up a control system where you could shoot them using a remote control, he explains. A drone catcher speeds toward its target drone. Image: Michigan Tech This drone catcher has a vision system as well and, when its felt to be the right moment, you shoot and the net is launched. The net itself has bullets attached, so when the bullets are shot, it carries the nets with them. But it doesnt require anything close to a perfect shot, Rastgaar adds. Even just catching one of the four propellers with the net should be enough to do the job, he says. The launcher itself is powered by pressurized CO2. When the net catches the target drone, it stays in possession of it and can carry it where you want, he says. We dont want to just force it to land somewhere if its carrying explosives. If you put it on the ground, just think of the chances of it exploding anyway. So you want to carry it to somewhere you can neutralize it. The control system has a visual feedback setup. A controller system gets information from a detection system and moves the drone catcher to the neighborhood of the target drone, he says. We are working on the control system now and we will have visual servo to aim the net launcher and engage. The vision system is a stereo camera and sends feedback to the controller, he says, adding that, at present, the launchers optimal target distance for capture is about 20 feet. The thought is it could one day maybe be used by law enforcement agencies and private security companies, he says. Its not for the civil population when you consider FAA laws. But you want the public to be safe and hopefully this can be a way to help. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion The thought is it could one day maybe be used by law enforcement agencies and private security companies.Prof. Mo Rastgaar, Michigan Technological University

Tips for Succeeding at a Job Interview

Tips for Succeeding at a Job Interview Tips for Succeeding at a Job Interview To succeed in a job interview,  its important to make a positive first impression and convince employers you would be a good fit for their company. Its also important to avoid making major mistakes that could raise questions about your professionalism or competence and cost you a chance at getting hired. Use this strategy to properly navigate a job interview, so you can land the perfect job. Be Prepared Analyze the job requirements and the employer and be prepared to share compelling reasons why you would be a good fit. Prepare and rehearse what you plan to say, including answers  to  common interview questions  such as the dreaded inquiry about your weaknesses. Carefully review your resume and be prepared to discuss challenges and successes in each position listed in the document.   Make a Good First Impression Dress the part of someone successful in your chosen field. Make sure your clothing is  appropriate for the work environment, fits well, and is neatly pressed.  Greet your  interviewer  with a firm- but not bone-crunching- handshake  and a warm smile. Sit up straight and lean slightly forward during the interview.  Make regular- but not piercing or staring- eye contact. Show energy and enthusiasm through your vocal tone and listen carefully to each question before responding. When the interview is finished, thank the interviewers for the opportunity and reiterate your interest in the position. Follow up with a letter, card, or email to each interviewer, expressing the same thanks and interest. Project a Positive Image Describe specific situations or challenges you have faced, the actions you took to intervene, and the results you generated. Pay particular attention to how you have positively impacted the bottom line for past employers. Examples may include saving money, increasing sales, retaining staff, recruiting employees, securing funding, or improving quality. Ask the Right Questions Remember that you are interviewing the employer as much as the employer is interviewing you. Focus on questions about specific expectations and goals, both short-term and long-term for the company and for the position in question. Good questions help you to discover if the employer is a good fit for you, and they show the employer that youve done your homework and have a sincere interest in the company. Avoid Criticism or Negativity Never criticize any previous employers, supervisors, or co-workers during a job interview. It can raise questions about your ability to work well with others or to accept accountability. As well, dont fixate on your own weaknesses or treat them as hindrances. Be prepared to acknowledge them, but address them as an opportunity to learn and improve. Use Honesty Avoid the temptation to exaggerate when addressing your skills and accomplishments. Its important to put a positive spin on what youve done and what you can do, but it all needs to be truthful. Being caught in even the smallest of white lies can raise questions about your character and fitness for the position in question. Avoid Lateness or Excessive Earliness Be on time for your interview, and remember to take into account that youll likely want a few minutes to situate yourself, organize your notes, and maybe use the restroom. You should leave early enough to arrive at the interview no more than five to 10 minutes before it starts. Arriving too far in advance of the scheduled time can leave a negative impression and possibly raise questions about your time management skills or ability to follow directions. Use Common Sense Dressing or behaving too casually can raise questions about your professionalism, as can actions such as checking your cell phone during the interview. If the interview involves a meal, never order an alcoholic beverage or select an entree that is difficult to eat gracefully. In general, follow your gut. If something seems like it would be inappropriate for a job interview, it likely is not a good choice. Last Piece of Advice Be confident about your abilities and skills, and know that the company would be fortunate to have you. Showing a company that you believe in yourself will help convince them to believe in you as well. Also, stay calm and focused to ensure that information is clearly communicated and understood, thus demonstrating your people and communication skills.

Why I Chose a Career in Health Tech

Why I Chose a Career in Health Tech Why I Chose a Career in Health Tech I’m your prototypical product person. After cutting my teeth at ICQ, which is arguably the first successful social network company, I’ve continued my path of monetizing data at scale by leveraging technology and my business acumen. And what better domain to excel at monetizing data through technology? That’s right, online advertising. I have spent a better part of a decade working for companies like Dotomi (now part of Alliance Data Systems Corporation), Facebook, and others. I’ve learned how to convert data into money. The birth of my second daughter, Aya, made me question my career choices and take a deep look at how I’m spending my time. Do I really want to continue and optimize the way people purchase more stuff they don’t need? Or should I spend my time helping people? Make the world a better place and all that. So there I was. A product person, looking to make the world a better place. Where should I start? I was looking for a big problem to solve, where the total addressable market is substantial, and the ability to drive positive outcomes is within reach, or doesn’t rely on technologies that have yet to be invented.   There were a few reasons that attracted me to healthcare . Lastly, my personal affinity towards healthcare: My father is a medical doctor. He oversaw an internal medicine unit in a leading hospital in Israel, and as I child, I remember vividly the heated debates with his colleagues and friends about the state of health care back home. The impact of these was apparently profound, as all my siblings ended up in medical school and later specialized in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Plastic Surgery. When I got the call from Livongo , I was delighted to see they’ve spent the first three years of their existence honing their products and services, and finding a strong product-market fit: It is hard to argue with 650+ clients, and 95% retention rate. With proven clinical results, Livongo is able to demonstrate financial cost-reduction to its clients. Livongo’s members are getting healthier, which results in our clients paying less and less in health care costs. Every company’s culture is different. And yet, there are commonalities, especially in Silicon Valley. If I were to describe a culture which celebrates shipping products fast in order to fuel its massive growth, leapfrog its competition and increase its marketshare, I suspect you’ll know which company is the poster child of that culture. In a similar vein, if I were to describe a culture that celebrates its cut-throat approach to winning business, drivers and riders, I suspect you’ll know which company I’m talking about. As you evaluate your next career move , it is important for you to map out your current core values (these might change over time) and find a company these aligns with . Personally, earlier in my career, I suspect my competitive nature would thrive in a cut-throat environment. These days, I don’t need a stick to motivate me, nor am I looking to artificially introduce stress into my life in order get going. I’m motivated to be the best version of myself and make a positive impact in the world. I rather work with likeminded people. What makes Livongo’s culture unique and appealing? Its obsession with our customers, and with its members - the humans who actually need help managing their chronic conditions. This obsession with customers and members led to a few innovations, that shaped out Livongo’s DNA: When members are using their blood glucose meter a few times a day, they were paying for test strips. Removing that barrier, and supplying our members with unlimited test strips free of charge, increased how often members were testing their blood glucose levels. We’ve also learned that getting members’ data and acting on it can create positive outcomes. So we started building our own cellular-connected devices. Whether its a blood glucose meter, blood pressure monitor, or a scale- they are all cellular connected. If we see that your blood glucose level are low, we will notify you to drink a glass of orange juice and bring it back up to normal levels. We have also learned that pairing a person with a chronic condition with a certified coach can yield positive outcomes. And so we’ve built out a national coaching team so we can provide unlimited coaching to our members. Combined these, you realize you’ve got a unique organization. One that excels in building hardware devices. Excels in building personalized digital experiences at scale. One that is leveraging the knowledge of expert physicians. One that is powered by human coaches. One that is obsessed. Obsessed with its customers and its members. Digital Health startups raised approximately $8.1 billion last year, according to venture fund Rock Health latest report,  up from $5.7 billion the year before.   As I said - U.S. health care spending is in the trillions . Come join me in our journey, as we help everyday people lead healthier lives. Eitan Shay is the Director of Product Management at Livongo   responsible for Livongo’s Member Experience platform and driving usage, retention, observability, and clinical improvement across Livongo’s member base.

Survey Many are doing side hustles during work hours

Survey Many are doing side hustles during work hours Survey Many are doing side hustles during work hours The days of working just one job are gone. Now, more than 7.6 million Americans are juggling multiple jobs, a number that’s the highest it has been in 20 years.CreditLoan recently surveyed over 950 side hustlers to find out why. What they found was that in our pursuit of money and happiness, we are blurring boundaries between when one job ends and another begins.Survey: Renting out your home is the most lucrative side hustleThe primary motivator to working a side hustle when you are already working one full-time job is what you would expect - more money. Having more spending money, increasing savings and paying off debt were the top reasons for creating a side hustle. They show us that too many of us are not feeling financially supported by our primary jobs.If you are contemplating a side hustle solely to supplement your income, consider renting out your home. Selling or renting property was the most profitable side hustle in the survey, earning workers an average of $500 a month. Ride-sharing ($350), becoming a fitness instructor ($200), and consulting work ($200) were the other top lucrative side hustles. In fact, if you want the most money in the littlest time, brush up on your IT skills. Computer repair earned workers an average of $20 per hour.More than 1 in 5 do side hustles while at  workWhen you are working a side hustle, you are sacrificing the time you could be spent sleeping, hanging out with your family - or doing your actual job that pays your rent. While 18% of lucky participants said that their side hustle required no sacrifice on their part, more than one in five admitted that it required them to do work while they were on the clock at their main job.  But when we are truly passionate about our side hustles, we will carve out the time for it, even at the expense of our mental health and social life. When you are constantly working, something’s gotta give, and it’s usually your relationship with your family and your mind. The top sacrifices side hustlers said they needed to make to maintain their gigs were recreation, family time, and sleep. These findings should give us pause. It may seem productive to work two jobs at once, but after a certain amount of logged hours, our visions swim and our productivity stalls.People who worked more than 11 hours a day increased their risk of experiencing a major depressive mode, the research found. And this hard work does not even pay off in our jobs. One five-year study found that if you  work more than 65 hours a week, your performance and productivity sharply falls. The gig economy can tempt you with its promises of flexibility and get-rich-quick schemes, but just make sure you know the time and energy sacrifice you are signing up for before you embark on one.
